The Assassin starring Shu Qi makes Cannes 2015 Lineup

Yay good news: Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien‘s upcoming film The Assassin has been selected for competition at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Shu Qi and Chang Chen. This epic martial arts film set in the Tang Dynasty focuses on a female assassin who falls in love with her target.

Reportedly, the film took 10 years to plan and make. It was done filming early last year, and post-production work took one year. This is Director Hou’s first film since “Flight of the Red Balloon” (2007).

“Meeting Dr. Sun” wins best picture award at Osaka festival

Director Yee Chih-yen‘s 2014 movie Meeting Dr. Sun won both the Best Picture Award and the Audience Awards at the Osaka Film Festival in Japan this Sunday. The film previously won the Best Original Screenplay Award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival last year.

“The honor means I and my team will have to keep working hard and keep cheering for Taiwan’s movie industry,” he said.

His last directing effort was the 2002 film Blue Gate Crossing, in which he launched both of Gwei Lun-mei and Bolin Chen‘s careers. For his new film, he used new actors Zhan Huai-ting and Matthew Wei.

“The First of May” trailer, starring Lyan Cheng

Director Zhou Ge Tai 周格泰 who has directed many music videos before will be making his feature film debut in May with The First of May 5月一号. The story follows a five sixth grade students in the 1980s until present time with two generational atmospheres and youthful love. For the title The First of May, Director Zhou explained, “Whether you are 17 years old now, or if you were 17 years old in 1982, the living conditions of every age and social atmosphere are different, but youth is forever the same.”

The film stars rookie actors Chihtian Shih 石知田, Color Yan 閻成誠, Lyan Cheng 程予希 and more. Lyan Cheng is playing two characters in the film, which are the mother’s role when she was younger and the daughter’s role. The First of May will be released May 01, 2015.

Andy Lau and more cast in Zhang Yimou’s “The Great Wall”

Director Zhang Yimou 張藝謀 has completed casting his upcoming epic Hollywood project The Great Wall with Chinese superstar Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Lin Gengxin, Zheng Kai, Chen Xue Dong, Huang Xuan, and Wang Jun Kai (from TFBoys). Hollywood stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, and William Dafoe will also be joining the Chinese actors.

The plot centers on “an elite force of soldiers making a last stand for humanity against mythical creatures on the world’s most iconic structure”. Production is set to begin in China this March.

Annie Yi’s directorial debut “The Queens”


Actress Annie Yi‘s directorial debut The Queens is slated for an April 16 release. The plot centers on city women with different characteristics all looking for love. Newly wed Annie Yi maintained a pious heart as she spent two years doing pre-production and seven months of post-production work. The Queens consists of an international star cast, including Song Hye-kyo, Dou Xiao, Joe Chen, Tony Yang, and Vivian Wu.

Annie stated, “Repeated editing really allowed me to tell the story that I wanted to tell. Only until the end did I understand the value of a film, to give the audience a better product.”
